The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union was established in June 1944 for the purpose of bringing together workers in the extractive industry in Ghana and beyond. The key functions of the Union include, but are not limited to, collective bargaining, advocacy, and campaigns, research and planning, training and education, organizing and recruitment, conflict resolution among others. As of 2017, the membership of the Union stood at 14,843, which included both the Branch and Professional & Managerial Staff Union members.
The Union wants to ensure that even in the context of rapid change, it is still able to promote and protect the rights and interests of its members. It has thus developed this Strategic Plan, which sets forth how it intends to achieve its mission in the next five years. The Strategy begins with a contextual analysis of the key issues and trends within the sector.
Our mission is to bring together all workers within the extractive industry of Ghana and beyond into a strong trade union organization for the purposes of safeguarding and advancing the interests of its members
Our vision is a vibrant and sustainable extractive industry that respects and values its workers and the community in which it works.
The jurisdiction of the Union shall cover the extractive industry of Ghana and beyond. For the avoidance of doubt however,
1.the Union shall be open to all workers in the Ghanaian labour market.
2.Membership of the Union shall be opened to all categories of workers that fall within the jurisdiction of the Union as well as staff of the Union at all levels.
3. Membership may also be conferred on persons outside the jurisdiction of the union where necessary.
4.Membership of the Union constitutes an acceptance by each member to be bound by the provisions of this Constitution, Policies, Decisions, and Directives of the Union.
5. A register of all members of the Union shall be kept at the Office of the General Secretary.
